Local Healthwatch Volunteer

Healthwatch Somerset (West Somerset)

Name: Local Healthwatch Volunteer
Organisation: Healthwatch Somerset (West Somerset)

Description

Our local Healthwatch Volunteers are friendly and approachable. They are the voice of Healthwatch Somerset and local people in their community. They support us by talking to people, gathering opinions about local health and care services (good or bad) and spreading the word about the important work we do.

Local Healthwatch Volunteers act as ambassadors for us at events (usually in pairs or more) and meetings and make sure our views and the views of local people are heard.

Organisation Description

We are a not-for-profit organisation established under the Health & Social Care Act. We will champion the consumer interest of all who use health and social care services.

Our role is to be active in the local community involving people, assisting people and putting forward the community's views about health and social care issues. In the main this will be achieved through our volunteers, who will represent established groups in the community, acting as a conduit for communication between their group(s) and Healthwatch Somerset and vice versa. They will also represent Healthwatch Somerset at various meetings, seminars and forums hosted by health and social care services providers.

We will, too, enter and view health and social care services while they are being delivered and observe them from a lay person's perspective - reporting our observations to the service provider and making them available to service users and the general public.

All of the above activity will also be fed into a national information 'hub' hosted by Healthwatch England so they can identify national trends and issues which they will then share with the appropriate national bodies (e.g. NHS England, The Care Quality Commission etc.).

We also provide a signposting service, 'Well Aware', which the public can access either online or by phone, and which offers details of services available to them (statutory, 'not-for-profit' and businesses).
